James DeGale has been out in the States training with pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jnr. Mayweather is in training for his comeback fight against Mexican favourite Juan Manuel Marquez after nearly a two year absence from the ring. As part of the promotional tour for the fight, Mayweather visited London and held an open training session at the Peacock Gym that was left packed out with fight fans. One of those was DeGale himself:

It was there that DeGale made contact with Mayweather and his trainer and uncle Roger Mayweather, who invited DeGale to train with the “Pretty Boy” out in LA. And so, DeGale and trainer Jim McDonnell flew out for two weeks of training that DeGale has described as the “experience of a lifetime”. He said, “This week has been an experience of a lifetime working with and watching the best pound for pound fighter on the planet Floyd Mayweather Jnr. Watching him train for 2-3 hours non-stop each day has made me realise how hard I need to continue working to become world champion. His drive, determination, discipline and dedication is second to none”.

DeGale, being several weight divisions higher, didn’t spar with Mayweather himself but he certainly seems to have taken a lot from the experience. “Floyd and Roger Mayweather, his trainer, have given me advise and tips after sparring with one of the gym’s hot prospects Deon Savage, 5-0 who I handled with ease. Savage said to me afterwards “You are going to the top and I am going to chase you there.” Savage has sparred Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell and he told my trainer Jim McDonnell that Ward and Dirrell have more experience than me, but I have more skill.” High praise indeed considering Ward and Dirrell have been selected as two of the six fighters participating in Showtime’s new ‘Super Six’ tournament alongisde World Champions Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch, and exactly the sort of confidence boost Degale will relish as he progresses on the World scene.

DeGale is currently preparing for his fourth professional fight which is set to form part of the undercard for the highly anticipated Merseyside derby between Paul Smith and Tony Quigley at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Friday 30th October.
