Groves to face Grigor Sarohanian in Essex

21 01 2010

After a series of pull-outs, George Groves’ opponent for Friday’s ‘Dapa Napa’ bill in Essex has finally been confirmed as Grigor Sarohanian.

The fight will be a six round contest for Groves, cut down from 8 because of the sheer number of bouts lined up for the packed Frank Maloney bill. It’ll be the first fight of an exciting year for the hot prospect from Hammersmith who had been due to fight in Vegas next week on the undercard of Shane Mosley v Andre Berto before the bill was cancelled.

“I’m gutted,” said Groves. “My dad woke me up this morning and told me the bill was off due to the earthquake in Haiti and I said ‘Oh no’ and went back to sleep. I got up later and thought I’d better check and I was like, ‘Oh man!’

“But everything happens for a reason. I remember I was supposed to fight on the David [Haye]-[Wladimir] Klitschko bill in front of 50,000 people and I was gutted when that fell through, but then I got to appear on the Haye-[Nikolai] Valuev show in November.”

Nevertheless, Friday will mark the beginning of the 21 year-old’s journey towards a title in 2010, with both the Commonwealth and British titles firmly in his sights.

“After this bout we are looking for a Commonwealth title fight or a British eliminator. [Trainer] Adam [Booth] said to me, ‘I know you want it and are ready. If it all works out you could be British champion by summertime as long as we can get you in the position to get the fights.’ That’s what we are aiming for this year.”
