DeGale stops Dilks in 1 and calls out Groves

19 09 2010

James DeGale made short work of Liverpudlian Carl Dilks to make it 8 straight wins from 8. Having struggled to make weight ahead of the British title eliminator, many expected a decent test for DeGale but the Olympic Gold medallist needed less than a round to see off the challenge of Dilks.

Boos did ring out around the crowd with many fans disappointed by what seemed a premature stoppage, but DeGale had begun to land cleanly and often enough for referee Howard Foster to sense danger for Dilks, stepping in to halt the contest with 6 seconds of the first round remaining.

After the fight, promoter Frank Warren called for a fight with rival George Groves, telling Sky Sports “We want Groves next.”

“He’s here and he’s (Groves) called him out. Now we’re saying put your money where your mouth is. I’ve offered them good money and they’ll get a written offer on Monday.”

Fans will be excited to see if the fight can be made, with December the likely date at Frank Warren’s scheduled show at the Excel Arena in London.
