DeGale: “I’ll knock you out February or March time.”

14 12 2010

James DeGale has signalled his intention to box old rival George Groves at the start of 2011. Groves, who beat DeGale in the amateurs, is currently undefeated as a professional in 11 fights (9 Ko’s) and is both the Commonwealth champion and mandatory challenger for the British title which DeGale now holds following victory over Paul Smith on Saturday night.

“He’s got heart and a bit of bottle so hopefully it’ll come about in the early part of next year”, said DeGale.

“But I would trigger him to pieces, and it wouldn’t last four rounds. Deep in his heart he knows that as well.

“You keep running your mouth saying you want the British title, so let’s do it! Let’s have a big showdown in the early part of next year.

“But a bit of advice, get in the gym and work on that defence for a couple of months — then I’ll knock you out February or March time.”

The rivals have repeatedly called for a fight with each other throughout 2010, though their respective promoters have failed to agree terms, Frank Warren Promotions twice declining offers by Hayemaker. However, it now seems the two sides could be ready to make the fight happen – Frank Warren commenting:

“If I was handling George Groves, I wouldn’t go for the fight. I always say styles make fights and there would only be one winner if James and George go toe-to-toe. From our side it’ll happen.”

That should be music to the ears of Groves’ manager and trainer Adam Booth, who’s counter-offer was dismissed as “uninvited” earlier in the year.

“It was a perfect performance for James. A great performance. It was exactly what I expected”, said Booth.

“James is the kind of guy who will never be easy to beat because of his style and attributes. You are always going to have to be punch perfect and well prepared. But George is a very good pressure fighter. It’s a fight that I want and a fight that I’m totally confident that George is going to win.”
