DeGale to fight French Journeyman in tune-up for Groves

10 03 2011

Current British Super-middleweight champion James DeGale will fight French journeyman Alpay Kobal in a non-title 8 round tune-up fight on Saturday at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow.

DeGale hasn’t fought for three months and will make his first ring appearance of the year in Scotland on the undercard of Ricky Burns’ WBO super-featherweight title defence against Joseph Laryea, as he prepares for a showdown with arch-rival George Groves.

Camp DeGale don’t seem to be taking any chances either, 34-year-old Kobal has won just seven out of 21 professional contests and has not tasted victory in his last five fights. This will only be the second time he has boxed outside of France. His first venture abroad ended with a points defeat at the hands of unbeaten German Dustin Dirks – although Kobal did not win a round on any of the three cards. He has also boxed twice in 5 weeks and lost both times, to a man with 1 win in 6.
