DeGale labours to routine stoppage

12 03 2011

James DeGale took 5 rounds to see off French Journeyman Alpay Kobal in a dull and meaningless contest at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow on Saturday night.

Never out of first gear, DeGale plodded to his 10th professional career win against an opponent who showed virtually no ambition or desire in a disappointing contest. Entering the fight Kobal had just seven wins in 21 bouts, and had boxed twice in 5 weeks and lost both times, to a man with 1 win in 6 – a desperately poor record considering he faced Olympic Gold Medallist and current British champion Degale. Worse though was the lack of punches thrown by the Frenchman, especially considering he landed on numerous occasions when he did. A bizarre referee stoppage ended the fight prematurely in the 5th to save DeGale’s blushes and the crowd’s patience and keep a showdown with long-time rival George Groves on course.
