From The Sun

James DeGale and Nathan Cleverly have scrapped plans to spar together again — because it was becoming too competitive.

The duo put in more than 30 rounds in April in preparation for their title bouts at London’s O2 Arena on May 21.

But a further week of sparring has been cancelled with both DeGale and Cleverly deciding it was better not to knock 10 bells out of each other.

Cleverly, who is preparing to face WBO light-heavyweight champ Jurgen Braehmer, said: “At the moment, James is a dangerous animal.

“We just couldn’t risk any more sparring because we didn’t want to take the edge off before our fights on May 21.

“It’s the hardest sparring I’ve ever had — and remember, I sparred with Joe Calzaghe and Enzo Maccarinelli when they were both world champions.”

DeGale, 25, is gearing up to settle the score with arch-rival George Groves on Frank Warren’s bumper This Is It card.

And the British super-middleweight champ wasted no time in echoing Cleverly’s sentiments when it came to describing the intensity of their training sessions.

Chunky said: “Nathan just never stops throwing punches. He was the perfect preparation for Groves because I had to work a lot harder in sparring than I’ll have to against Ugly Kid.”
