James DeGale

James DeGale rocketed to fame by winning Gold in Beijing in 2008 to become the Olympic Champion.

James "Chunky" DeGale

His victory in the Olympics came via hugely impressive and tough fought wins against former Olympic gold medalist from Athens Bakhtiyar Artayev, Irish hopeful Darren Sutherland and the highly rated Cuban Emilio Correa Jr. Indeed, both Sutherland and Correa had previously beaten DeGale in close fights in 2007 and 2008 but when it mattered, on the biggest amateur stage of all, DeGale did the business and added Olympic Gold to his Commonwealth Bronze and two ABA titles.

And he’s certainly done the business so far since turning professional with experienced promoter Frank Warren on December 2nd 2008, notching up 9 wins from 9 and becoming British Champion in the process. In particular, DeGale looked very strong in dispatching Ciaran Healy inside the first round at the MEN Arena in July, performing on the undercard of fellow Olympic medallist Amir Khan’s world title triumph against Andreas Kotelnik. Displaying a more aggressive approach and improved punching power to compliment his obvious skill and handspeed, DeGale was able to blow away Healy in the same manner he’d defeated Jindrich Kubin 8 weeks previously.

Encouraging signs and exactly what’s needed if DeGale is to fulfill his potential and his dreams of becoming a World Champion; “I see British boxers win world titles and think ‘that’s me all over’ – the big stadiums, the crowds, the lights,” said DeGale. “My first aim was to become an Olympian and the second aim is to become a professional world champion.”

And who better to help him do that than pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. who DeGale has been training with in LA, an invaluable experience for the young Brit. Degale said, “My trip to Vegas and Mayweather’s camp has been better than expected and without any doubt it has made me realise the saying we use “If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail”. Mayweather never fails. As part of my learning curb I will certainly be following his script.”

Well, it’s still early days but the script is reading well so far and DeGale undoubtedly has all the pedigree to make it to the top and convert amateur medals into professional titles, and I for one am expecting a seriously exciting journey.
