DeGale becomes unwitting You Tube sensation

7 04 2011

As reported on BoxRec News yesterday, James DeGale has become the victim of an unflattering ‘tribute’ to the Olympic gold medallist’s perceived lack of eloquence. The video’s author, presumably a fan of DeGale’s rival George Groves, has taken the sobriquet ‘James DeFail’ and spliced together some of the boxer’s less flattering interview moments.

It can only heat up what is already a very spicy match between the pair for DeGale’s British title, scheduled to take place at the O2 Arena, London, on May 21st.

It’s ON!!! – Groves v DeGale set for May 21st!!

17 03 2011

The long awaited domestic showdown between arch rivals George Groves and James DeGale is officially ON.

An excited press gathered at the Grosvenor House Hotel for the official announcement from Promoter Frank Warren that the two West London rivals will finally meet in a British & Commonwealth title fight at the 02 Arena on May 21st.

Despite losing the purse bids to Hayemaker earlier in the year, Frank Warren will stage the fight alongside Nathan Cleverly’s WBO World title shot. Warren admitted to being delighted at making the fight: “To get this fight on is fantastic”, said Warren.

“The super-middleweight division has always had a special place in the hearts of the British public.

“I promoted some great champions in Joe Calzaghe, Chris Eubank, Steve Collins and Nigel Benn, but I believe DeGale can be better than all of them.

“Adam [Booth] has confidence in his man, and I’ve got confidence in my man”, added Warren.

“But for me I think styles make fights and George’s style is made for James.

“This fight against Groves will be an absolute war though, and it’s a massive test. It reminds me of all those great fights we had between Benn, Eubank, Collins and Calzaghe.”

“This is personal”, said DeGale.

“He’s lived in my shadow half his life and he’s always been the ugly kid behind James DeGale”.

Talking of DeGale’s insults, Groves joked “Yeah, I’ve cried a few times”.

“Cried with laughter. Especially last week after his post-fight interview.”

The two Super-middleweights have been rivals ever since their amateur days, when they were both clubmates at Dale Youth ABC. At two years younger, Groves saw DeGale win back to back ABA titles but achieved the same feat himself – beating DeGale on route in 2006. Talking of the rivalry, Groves said: “The fact that James DeGale was Olympic champion, but number 2 in his own gym. That’s where the rivalry comes from.”

DeGale labours to routine stoppage

12 03 2011

James DeGale took 5 rounds to see off French Journeyman Alpay Kobal in a dull and meaningless contest at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow on Saturday night.

Never out of first gear, DeGale plodded to his 10th professional career win against an opponent who showed virtually no ambition or desire in a disappointing contest. Entering the fight Kobal had just seven wins in 21 bouts, and had boxed twice in 5 weeks and lost both times, to a man with 1 win in 6 – a desperately poor record considering he faced Olympic Gold Medallist and current British champion Degale. Worse though was the lack of punches thrown by the Frenchman, especially considering he landed on numerous occasions when he did. A bizarre referee stoppage ended the fight prematurely in the 5th to save DeGale’s blushes and the crowd’s patience and keep a showdown with long-time rival George Groves on course.

Groves v DeGale set for April 9th?

10 03 2011

The British Boxing Board of control have pencilled in the eagerly awaited British & Commonwealth Super-Middleweight title clash for April 9th at London’s Olympia.

There had been talk of Frank Warren hosting the fight on his upcoming May 21st bill, but the BBBoC’s latest championship circular suggests Dave Coldwell, who won the purse bid for Hayemaker Promotions, will stage the fight on April 9th, ahead of the Board’s original deadline.

The date is by no means concrete however, and many still expect the fight to be put back. Neither Hayemaker nor Warren have confirmed they expect the fight to go ahead at such an early date and a request to push the title clash back could come from either party.

DeGale to fight French Journeyman in tune-up for Groves

10 03 2011

Current British Super-middleweight champion James DeGale will fight French journeyman Alpay Kobal in a non-title 8 round tune-up fight on Saturday at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow.

DeGale hasn’t fought for three months and will make his first ring appearance of the year in Scotland on the undercard of Ricky Burns’ WBO super-featherweight title defence against Joseph Laryea, as he prepares for a showdown with arch-rival George Groves.

Camp DeGale don’t seem to be taking any chances either, 34-year-old Kobal has won just seven out of 21 professional contests and has not tasted victory in his last five fights. This will only be the second time he has boxed outside of France. His first venture abroad ended with a points defeat at the hands of unbeaten German Dustin Dirks – although Kobal did not win a round on any of the three cards. He has also boxed twice in 5 weeks and lost both times, to a man with 1 win in 6.
